Chem 9.1 Energy changes in chemical reactions Flashcards
What is an exothermic reaction?
A reaction that releases heat & an increase in temperature (+ temp. change).
What are examples of exothermic reactions?
Burning reactions (combustion of fuels)
Detonation of explosives
Reaction of metals with acids
Most neutralization reactions
What is an endothermic reaction?
A reaction that takes in heat & a decrease in temperature (- temp. change).
What are examples of exothermic reactions?
Melting
Evaporation + Boiling
Some salts dissolving in water
If heat is given out (exothermic), then where does that energy come from?
From chemical energy
If extra energy is needed (endothermic), then where does that energy come from?
From thermal energy.
