Chem Flashcards
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
Compound that is the important intracellular energy source; cellular energy
Acid
Substance that liberates hydrogen ions when in an aqueous solution
Base
Substance that accepts hydrogen ions; proton acceptor
Carbohydrate
Organic compound composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; includes starches, sugars, cellulose
Enzyme
Substance formed by living cells that acts like a catalyst in bodily chemical reactions
Lipid
Organic compound formed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen; examples are fats and cholesterol
Nucleic Acid
Class of organic molecules that includes DNA and RNA
pH
Symbol for hydrogen ion concentration
Protein
Complex nitrogenous substance; the main building materials of cells
Nucleus
Dense central body in most cells containing the genetic material of the cell
Nuclear membrane
double lipid bilayer membrane which surrounds the genetic material and nucleolus in eukaryotic cells
Chromatin
Structures in the nucleus that carry hereditary factors (genes)
Chromosomes
Barlike body of tightly coiled chromatin; visible during cell division
Microvilla
Tiny projections on the free surfaces of some epithelial cells; increase surface area of absorption
Cytoplasm
Substance of a cell other than that of the nucleus
Cytosol
aqueous component of the cytoplasm of a cell, within which various organelles and particles are suspended
Mitochondria
The rodlike cytoplasmic organelles responsible for ATP generation for cellular activities
Ribosomes
Cytoplasmic organelles at which proteins are synthesized
Endoplasmic reticulum
membranous network of tubular or saclike channels in the cytoplasm of a cell
Golgi apparatus
complex of vesicles and folded membranes within the cytoplasm of most eukaryotic cells, involved in secretion and intracellular transport
Lysosomes
Organelles that originated from the Golgi apparatus and contain strong digestive enzymes
Cytoskeleton
microscopic network of protein filaments and tubules in the cytoplasm of many living cells, giving them shape and coherence
Centrioles
Minute body found near the nucleus of the cell; active in cell division
Template
DNA replication each strand of the duplex acts as a template for the synthesis of a new double helix
