CHEM Flashcards
is anything that has mass and occupies space
Matter
refers to the amount of matter present in a sample
Mass
3 Physical state of matter
1.) Solid
2.) Liquid
3.) Gas
Fourth state of matter which is made up of groups of positively and negatively charged particle s moving at a high speed or rate
Plasma
State of mater in which separate atoms or subatomic particles, are cooled to near absolute zero temperature
Bose Einsteine Condensate
Is a process in which a substance changes
Physical Change
process in which a substance undergoes a change in chemical composition
Chemical Change
Are tightly packed and molecules are incompressible
Solid Particles
are close together but are moving freely it is also considered to be relatively incompressible
Liquid Particles
are far apart and randomly moving
Gas Particles
Distinguishing characteristics of a substance that is used in its identification and description
Property
Properties of matter are of two general types:
1.) Physical Property
2.) Chemical Property
Characteristics of a substance that can be observed without changing the basic identity of the substance
Physical Property
2 TYPES OF PHYSICAL PROPERTY
1.) Intensive
2.) Extensive
a characteristic of a substance that describes the way the substance undergoes or resists change to form a new substance
Chemical property
Pertains to the property which is independent of the amount of matter
Intensive Property
depends on the amount of matter
Extensive property
is a single kind of mater that cannot be separated into other kinds of matter by any physical means
Pure Substance
contains only that substance and nothing else
Pure Substance
are substances that can’t be separated by either physical and chemical means
Elements
are made up of one or more elements that can be separated through any chemical means
Compound
a physical combination of two or more pure Substance in which each substance retains its own chemical identity
Mixture
a mixture that contains visibly different phases each of which has different properties
Heterogenous mixture
a mixture that contains only one visibly distinct phase which has uniform properties throughout
Homogenous mixture
