chem Flashcards
what is an ionic lattice
a repeating pattern of oppositely charged ions
what is a covalent bond
when elements share electrons
Bonding in magnesium ( metals)
metals have metallic bonding in which they lose electrons to gain positive ions ( cations) and there is a strong electrostatic between the cations and the oppositely charged delocalized electrons
Bonding in silicon ( non metals in general)
Covalent bonding so electrons are being shared - 2 atoms share a pair of electrons
properties of ionic lattices
- high boiling points , electrical conductivity when molten
giant structures, hard/brittle , insulators in solid form
properties of giant covelent structures
- high boiling/melting points
no electrical conductivity
what is the independent variable
a factor that is changed during the experiment to see the effect it has on another factor
why do the different isotopes of the same element have the same chemical properties
as they have the same number of electrons on the outer shell
what is resolution
the smallest value you can read on a burette
