Chem 121 Exam 1 Flashcards
Matter, Measurement, Problem Solving, Atoms, Elements, Molecules, Compounds
what are atoms?
the smallest particle of pure substances
what are molecules?
the smallest particle 2+ atoms together which forms substances
what is the scientific method?
observation/question
research topic area
hypothesis
test with experiment
analyze data
report conclusions
what is a scientific theory?
all the experimental evidence for a proposed mechanism; explains why or how it happens
what is a scientific law?
same thing, but it has calculations; describes what happens
what are the three states of matter?
solid, liquid, and gas
what is decanting?
it is for heterogeneous mixtures
slow pouring of a liquid off the top (water off of wet sand)
what is distillation?
it is for homogeneous mixtures
boiling off of the more volatile liquid and then condensing it
what is filtration?
for heterogeneous mixtures
insoluble solid in liquid (pour it through filter paper in a funnel)
what are physical changes?
change in state of matter or appearance only
what are chemical changes?
change in atoms or molecules
what is kinetic energy?
energy in MOTION (and thermal energy that is lost in transfer)
what is potential energy?
energy that is in storage?
what is the first law of thermodynamics?
energy is not created nor is it destroyed, always transfer among kinetic, potential, and thermal transfer
