Chem Flashcards
LIST THE SUBATOMIC PARTICLES IN AN ATOM
Protons (+)
Neutrons (n/a)
Electrons (-)
WHAT WAS RUTHERFORD’S EXPERIMENT?
- An atom is 99.99% space
- Nucleus is postively charged
MASS NUMBER
Total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom
WHAT IS THE ELECTRON SHELL ARANGEMENT?
First shell = 2
Second shell = 8
Third shell = 8 (18)
e.g. Boron (B) - (2,3)
WHAT ARE VALENCE ELECTRONS?
The electrons on the outer shell of an atom
WRITE THE LEWIS DOT STRUCTURE OF BORON
google it you cant add pictures on this bloody thing
:(
WHAT IS AN ISOTOPE?
An isotope is a variant of an atom on the Periodic Table with the same atomic number (number of protons), but a different number of neutrons (different atomic mass)
DEFINE A NUCLEAR REACTION
Involves the nucleus - the nucleus splits, and the protons and neutrons are rearranged, releasing a tremendous amount of energy
SIDENOTE - Normal chermical reactions involve electrons
(there’s nothing here)
NUMBER OF PROTONS, NEUTRONS, AND ELCTRONS IN Carbon-12 V.S. Carbon-13
Carbon-12 –> P:6, N:6, E:6
Carbon-13 –> P:6, N:7, E:6
