Chem 112 (Vocab) Flashcards
A measure of the amount of matter in a substance/object.
Mass
A measure of the space occupied by the object.
Volume
Anything that has mass, takes up space
Matter
Is the simplest form of matter that has a unique set of properties.
Element
A substance that contains 2 or more elements chemically.
Compound
Process that separates a solid from a liquid.
Filtration
Process of boiling a liquid to make a Vapour and condense the Vapour to a liquid.
Distillation
A property that depends on the amount of matter
Extensive Property
A property that depends on the type of matter
Intensive Property
Matter that has a uniform and definite composition
Substance
A physical blend of 2 or more substances that aren’t chemically combined.
Mixture
A mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout
Homogeneous Mixture (solution)
A mixture in which the composition isnt uniform throughout
Heterogeneous Mixture
Not easily compressed, has a more defined shape/volume
Solid
Has an indefinite volume and is not easily compressed.
Liquid
Has an indefinite shape/volume and is easily compressed
Gas
Some properties of material change but the compression doesnt
Physical Change
A change that produces matter with ha different composition than the original matter.
Chemical Change
Ability of a substance to undergo a specific chemical change
Chemical Property
A quality/condition of a substance that can be observed or measured without changing the substances composition
Physical Property
During any chemical reaction the mass of products are always equal to the mass of the reactants
Law of conservation of mass
A chemical change is required to breaks down compounds into simpler substances
Breaking down compounds
Properties of compounds are quite different from those of their component elements
Properties of compounds
A homogeneous mixture composed of only one phase
Solution
