Chem 1010 - Transition Metals Flashcards
Why does the 4s orbital fill before the 3d orbitals
This is because the 3d orbital has slightly more energy than the 4s orbital ad therefore the 4s fills first
What are organomattalics
Metals bonded to organic molecules
Why in chromium and copper do the 3d orbital fill first before the 4s
This is because in chromium it is 3d5 and therefore half filled and in copper it is 3d10, which is fully filled. The half filled and fully filled orbital is more stable and therefore lower in energy.
What is the general trend between atomic radii as you go across the transition metal Period.
The general trend is that the size of the radius decreases as you go across the group. This is because of an increase in effective nuclear charge… which follows slaters rule.
What are the two anomalies in the trend of atomic radii across the transition metal group.
There is a spike up at manganese.
Towards the end of the group with Ni Cu Zn each slightly goes up.
Why is manganese’s atomic radius higher than you would expect.
This is because the d orbital is had filled.
Why does the atomic radii slightly increase towards the end of the d block
This is because of electron repulsions in the filled d-orbitals
What is the trend in radii from the 3d period to the 4d period.
The radii increases due to shielding
What is the trend between 4d and 5d in atomic radii
There is close to know change
Why is there close to no change from period 4d to 5d
This is because when the f block electrons fill there is close to no shielding and therefore not much change In Zeff
