CHEM 100 Flashcards
What is Matter?
Anything that has mass, occupies space and posses inertia
What does composition mean in Chemistry
It’s the types and proportions of simpler substances that make up
a sample of matter.
What are the properties of a substance?
They are the characteristics that give each substance it’s unique identity.
What is the definition of this example? Cu and S can be distinguished by the property of colour; Cu is reddish brown and S is yellow.
Properties
What are Physical Properties?
Properties substances show by itself without interacting with another substance, or properties substances show without changing it’s composition.
Colour, weight, density, and electric conductivity are examples of what?
Physical Properties
What is Physical Change
It occurs when a substance alters it’s form or shape but not it’s composition.
If I bend a piece of gold into a different shape and don’t change it’s chemical composition; what change am I inflicting?
Physical Change
What are chemical Properties?
The ability or inability of a sample of matter to undergo a change in composition like rusting iron.
What is a Chemical Change?
It occurs when substances are converted into different substances.
What is the difference between Chemical Properties and Chemical Changes?
Chemical Properties express how the chemical will react with other chemicals, Chemical Changes are accompanied by changes in chemical composition and a change in chemical properties.
What is all matter made up of?
Atoms
what are the three types of matter compositions?
Elements, Compounds and Mixtures
What is a Substance
Matter with fixed composition
What are the differences between Substances and Mixtures?
- Substances always behave and look the same.
- Substances are pure by definition
- Mixtures have variable composition
What are elements?
- Elements are made up of a single type of atom
- Elements can’t be further separated by chemical or physical means
- Elements have names
- Macroscopic properties are unique to each element
- Most elements occur naturally as collection of atoms, some occur as a collection of molecules
What are Molecules?
They are independent structures of two or more atoms bound together
What are the properties of Compounds?
- Substance comprised of two or more elements
- Consists of a fixed number of atoms of each element
- Properties are different from those of it’s component elements
- Can be broken down into elements but can’t be physically changed
What are some example of a compound
Carbon Dioxide, Sugar, and Water
