Study for unit 1&2 exams
WHAT IS NATURE…
Nature is the living things, the ecosystems and the processes that form them, and the places in which we find all of these.
WHAT IS AN OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENT…
Outdoor environments have minimal influence from people, but may also have had human intervention.
TYPES OF OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS…
Outdoor environments include: • Wilderness • Managed parks • Urban environments • Built environments
TYPES OF OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS…
Wilderness Environments:
- An environment that is big and remote.
- Untouched (or relatively untouched) by humans.
- Self-sufficient in maintaining its ecosystem processes and biological diversity.
- Protected and managed to preserve its natural condition.
TYPES OF OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS…
Urban Environments:
• Areas with permanent infrastructure.
• Designed to support higher populations.
• Include cities and towns.
TYPES OF OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS…
Built Environments:
• Have been created or modified by people
• Include buildings, parks, transport systems
• Some attempt to recreate natural environments e.g. indoor rock-climbing
TYPES OF OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS…
Managed Parks:
17 percent of Victoria’s total area is protected in a series of parks and reserves
• National parks
• Wilderness parks
• Marine parks and sanctuaries • State parks
WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENT MOTIVATIONS…
Motivations: The reasons why we do something. Intrinsic motivations: From within ourselves. Extrinsic motivations: From outside ourselves.
The broad groups of motivations…
- Competence/ mastery
- Stimulus avoidance
- Socialisation
- Cognitive reward.
PERSONAL RESPONSES TO OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS…
Positive responses
Appreciation, awe, contemplation, inspiration, exhilaration, connection and curiosity.
Negative responses
Fear, revulsion, curiosity.
Factors influencing our responses:
Factors influencing our responses:
age, background, education, experience, culture, religion, socioeconomic background, media.
HOW DO WE KNOW, EXPERIENCE & RESPOND TO OUTDOOR ENVIRONMENTS?
As a resource - so humans can survive.
As recreation and adventure
As a spiritual connection - connecting to something on a deeper level.
As a study site.
Experiential knowledge…
Experiential knowledge is obtaining knowledge by being in an environment.
Environmental and natural history…
knowing what has occurred in a specific environment throughout a period of time.
Ecological perspective…
The ecological perspective is the interrelationships between living organisms and their surroundings.
