Checkride Flashcards
Pre-maneuver checklist
Altitude

Clearing turns
Declare (on the radio)
Aux pumps on for all maneuvers
Always hold altitude
Go through the run-up checklist
Notes: only MOMENTARY feather as to not cause damage to governor
“Props: Exercise” (100-200RPM) means momentary feather 3 times, checking RPM, MP and oil pressure
“Props: Feather check” means you’re listening for a whoosh of air
“Check load sharing” means turn alt switch off/on one by one
What happens to the oil pressure in the prop if you increase the throttle?
When you increase the throttle, the props want to spin faster and will for a moment. Then the governor kicks in, removing oil.
What if you try the gear pump 3 times and after 30sec each, it still fails?
If the pump is unable to maintain the high pressure, hydraulic pressure will travel from the hi pressure to low pressure chambers and the gear will fall.
Checkride FAQs
45 min long
gear and props, VMC and PAST
Will the prop feather if an engine shuts down due to running out of fuel?
NO! Oil pressure is built up and it’s still there (pilot valve stops it from leaving). If you lose an engine due to loss of oil pressure, that is when the prop will feather.
When does oil enter the accumulator? How much oil pressure is it?
Enters when you bring the prop to feather. 100-120 psi
How do you know if the gear pump is on? (2)
There’s a red light and an ammeter load.
What 3 buses are in the electrical system?
Main
Battery
Avionics
What are the 3 configurations? Include MP, RPM, gear/flaps in order
Clean 11” full fwd
Dirty gear down, 15-17” full fwd, flaps
Cruise (steep turns only) 20-23”/2300
Procedure: steep turns
Reference
21”/2300RPM (airspeed actually doesn’t matter)
50deg L bank. keep nose 0-2.5deg above horizon
Add 1”, trim
Watch your altitude
On R turn, keep nose ~3.5deg above horizon & trim
Do we ever take off with flaps?
No
Procedure: Slow flight (Dirty)
Maintain your altitude during all of this:
Gear first!
Power 15”
Flaps
75 kts
Recovery: CCCC Full power, flaps 10, positive rate gear up, flaps up
Procedure: Slow flight (Clean)
11”
props full
Maintain 85
Recover with full power
Procedure: Over the runway & flare
Power out over rwy
Landing assured 80 kts (lift nose but not level yet)
Bring up nose slowly to level
Idle over 2nd stripe (when you can’t see 1000’ markers)
Touch down
Single engine: leave power in, flaps 10
Procedure: Emergency descent
Mixture rich Idle Props full fwd Gear down Cowl flaps closed Descend at 132 and bank Recover at 1700', go 112kts, gear up
Procedure: Accelerated stalls
Clean configuration: 11” props full fwd
90 kts
Bank & yank
CCCC
What’s the engine model number, and what does it mean?
O-360-A1G6D (LO for R engine)
360 displacement in cylinder
How does engine turn to L?
Crankshaft mounted backwards or the whole engine mounted backwards
3 components that describe the prop
Full feathering constant speed (same rpm any attitude) controllable pitch (can change blade angle)
Does the prop use same oil as engine?
Yes
Where are the fuel sumps?
1 on main tank
1 on strainer
2 on crossfeed
Combustion heater burns fuel from which tank?
R only
One of your fuel pumps is broken. What do you do?
Aux pump on. Fuel selector on CROSSFEED. Now both engines can take from one tank.
Above 100kts, which gear might not lock?
Main. Nose wheel will be ok.
Define asymmetrical thrust
Thrust produced unevenly or off center from prop axis of rotation. Tendency to roll/yaw toward dead engine.
Why is 70-80% of climb performance lost when you lose an engine?
You have 50% power available, but a lot more drag.
Is accelerate stop & accelerate go distance for one engine or 2?
It’s for 2.
Does duchess have accelerate go distance?
How does this affect how we deal with emergencies?
Yes, at ANY weight and density alt. See 5-29 of POH
Know before you takeoff whether you can climb if you lose an engine. Also this is for a new plane w test pilots.
What reg #s say duchess not required to climb on one engine?
23.2120 and 2125
Short field takeoffs
Vr 67, pitch for 80 until clear obstacle (200’)
Positive rate = gear up even if runway remains
Decision altitude
3000’
below that, do the whole drill
above that, do the drill but troubleshoot before feathering (fuel selectors, etc). then checklist, then feather and secure engine
SAY R OR L engine!!!
The drill
directional control
blue line
mixture, props, throttles, flaps, gear up, FUEL PUMPS ON, identify, verify
(troubleshoot here if needed)
feather, mixture. checklist (secure engine)
P Factor
yaw or roll?
Yaw
difference in the total component of thrust
bigger arm = worse effect
Accelerated slipstream
Roll
Difference in total component of lift. Engine sucks air through and over the wing (bernoulli principle)
Arm differential
Spiraling slipstream
yaw
P factor means air coming through prop on R side is faster (lower pressure). Air travels toward it, so spiraling slipstream goes sideways
Aerodynamic control forces: more effective w more airflow
Torque
L engine out: asymmetrical thrust makes things worse because it makes lift on operative engine side and it goes same direction as torque effect.
COMBATS
Critical engine failed and windmilling (max drag)
Operating engine at max t/o power
Max takeoff weight
Bank up to 5°
Aft CG (most unfavorable)
Takeoff configuration (least stability)*
Standard day, 29.92” Hg, 15°C, sea level (max engine power)
*Rudder trim neutral raises Vmc because it’s not helping counteract P-factor. So it limits the available rudder.
Can you go props full fwd over 100kts?
Yes, in an emergency they can go fwd at any speed. But under 100kts limits stress to the governor.
Differential ailerons - do they travel farther up or down?
What are Frise ailerons?
Travel farther “up”
Frise - up aileron uncovers a ridge on the bottom that causes drag
What time of trim is the rudder?
Elevator?
Ailerons?
Rudder - servo
Elevator - antiservo
Aileron - not trim, it’s a differential in tensions
What runs the vacuum pumps?
Engine-driven (except turn coordinator gyro which is electrical)
However the G5 is not vacuum-driven
Can a single generator/alternator charge both batteries?
Yes - there’s only 1 battery. Even with the 12V one.
What are the voltages for 01R and 83M?
01R - alternator 55A 28V, battery 55A 24V
83M - alternator 55A 28V, battery 35A 12V
What if you’re a little short on the short field landing?
GO AROUND
What do you do on base?
UNDERSHOOT YOUR TURN
You’re on an instrument approach and lose an engine. What do you do?
Aviate, navigate, communicate
Directional control and blue line, start to intercept as you do the drill, ask tower to “say again”
Remember to ___ on your short-field landing
say “max braking”
and go around if you’re gonna land short
when it’s time to do maneuvers, don’t forget to…
