CHD Flashcards
what is CHD?
coronary heart disease is the most common type of heart disease. (AKA coronary artery disease). it is plaque buildup in your arteries. It’s known as hardening of the arteries, too. Arteries carry blood and oxygen to your heart
what are the controllable risk factors?
alcohol, smoking, lack of exercise
what are the uncontrollable risk factors?
age, genetics, ethnicity
what happens when you have CHD?
When plaque builds up, it narrows your coronary arteries, decreasing blood flow to your heart. Eventually, the decreased blood flow may cause chest pain (angina), shortness of breath, or other coronary artery disease signs and symptoms. A complete blockage can cause a heart attack
what are the treatments?
drugs, valve replacement, heart transplant, artificial heart, stents
what is a valve replacement?
mechanical or biological valves are used to replace the weak ones
how does a valve replacement prevent or treat heart or circulation problems?
the heart is stopped and the new valve replaces the weak ones, allowing blood to flow through and it reduces strain.
positives and negatives of a valve replacement
helps with blood flow and reduces tissue damage however they will need to be on medication for the rest of their lives to prevent blood clots
what could increase the risk of getting CHD?
stress, dehydration, smoking, diet
what could decrease the risk of getting CHD?
don’t smoke. have a healthy diet
