Chassis Items Flashcards
Front Bumper Area
- loose or missing bolts and broken welds on bumper mounts
- damage to gravel pan and proper mounting
- damage to wiring and proper mounting
- properly secured air horns, siren head, and wind up
- damage to low hanging parts like front intake piping
- grounding strap
Radiator
Radiator is used to keep engine and tranny running at proper operating temperatures
Bottom:
- blockage from debris in front of radiator
- damage to the cooling fins
- leaks
- proper mounting
Top:
- If hot, check by sight level. If cool, pull cap
- If fluid level is low, fill radiator and reservoir with the marked levels with regular tap water
- check all hoses for leaks and any damage from chaffing
Steering Assembly
Consits of the steering arm, steering gear, pitman arm, and steering linkage
- loose linkages
- hydraulic oil leaks
- loose or missing bolts
- broken mounts
Tires and Wheels
Wheels:
- Sidewall damage
- Tread damage or debirs
- Tread depth of 5/32” min
- Valve stems are tight, not damaged and caps are in place
- Adequate air pressure (within 10 psi of other tires)
- Duals not touching and no debris between
- Wheel covers are tight
Wheels:
- Not bent
- Free of cracks
- Free of damaged beads
- Front hub oil
Q Siren
Loose wires and bolts
Steering Arm
Excessive play at joints
Steering Center Link or Tie Rod
Damage and excessive play at tie rods
Front Springs
- Broken springs
- Loose u-bolts
- Springs shifting on axles
- Broken center pin
- Spring hangers
Front Brakes
- Grooves or cracks in rotors
- pad thickness
- properly secured brake cans
- oil leaking from hub seal
Grounding Strap
Grounding straps provides the connection between the battery, frame, and chassis components
Quick Release Valves
Used to send appropriate amount of air to brakes. Also the link to the anti-lock brake system - pulses the air to the cans to keep from skidding
- loose air lines
- tight wires
- proper mounting
Engine
- damage to pan
- oil leaks
ECM
This is the brain for the engine and the pressure governor
- loose or damaged wiring
- oil leaking into ECM and wiring
- proper mounting
Air Dryer
Used to remove the moisture from the air system. Uses a condescend filter and expels a shot of air after every compressor cycle
- excessive oil leaking from bottom
- good hose and wire condition
- proper mounting
- filter replaced within last 12 months
Cab-Tilt Motor and Reservoir
- proper oil level
- loose wiring and hoses
- leaks
- proper mounting
Transmission
Bottom:
- oil leaks around bottom and rear seal
- good cooler line condition
- tight yokes and u-joints
- all bolts and caps in place
- proper mounting
Top:
- loose wires
- proper oil level
DPFS
System acts as the muffler and also traps particulate matter from the exhaust. Once it gets to a certain restriction it must be regened. It does this by injecting fuel into the canister and burning it off. Exhaust temps will get very hot
- signs of exhaust leaks
- damage
- proper mounting
Driveline Yoke, Universal Joint and Slip Joint
- play in the u-joint
- bolts missing from caps
- excessive grease being flung out indicating a bad seal or over greasing on slip joint
- signs of excessive movement
Frame Rails and Cross Members
- cracks
- loose bolts
- wires hanging out from the wire looms
- wires being chaffed from rubbing on frame
Carrier Bearing
Is what supports the driveline and helps reduce vibration when it has a long span
- excessive movement up and down and side to side by pushing on driveline beside it
Rear View of Pump Transmission
- Ensure oil is clear and the level is visible anywhere within the sight glass
- leaks on the input and output side
- linkages and airlines for pump shift in proper working order
Fuel Filter
- Check glass bowl on top to be sure filter is not plugged (the dirtier it is, the higher the level will be)
- no leaks
- hoses in good shape
- securely fastened
