Q

MEA

A

Minimum En-route Altitude is the lowest published altitude between radio fixes that guarantees adequate navigational signal reception and obstruction clearance of 1000’ in non mountainous and 2000’ in mountainous terrain

Q

MOCA

A

Minimum Authorized Obstruction Altitude, provides the same obstruction clearances an MEA but ensures reliable navigation only within 22NM of facility and obstacle clearance

Q

MAA

A

Maximum Authorized Altitude is the highest altitude at which the airway can be flown with assurance of receiving adequate navigation signals. Chart depictions appears as “MAA-1500”

Q

MRA

A

Minimum Reception Altitude identifies the lowest altitude at which an intersection can be determined from an off-course NAVAID. If the reception is line of sight based, signal coverage will only extend to the MRA or above . If the ACFT is equipped with DME the intersection can be identified with such equipment, the pilot could define the fix without attaining the MRA

Q

MCA

A

Minimum Crossing Altitude will be charted when a higher MEA route segment is approached. The MCA is usually indicated when a pilot is approached. The MCA is usually indicated when a pilot is approaching steeply rising terrain and obstacle clearance and/or signal reception is compromised. In this case the pilot is required to initiate a climb so the MCA is reached by the time the intersection is crossed

Q

OROCA(NOS)

A

Off Route Obstacle Clearance Altitude Provides obstacle clearance of 1000’ and 2000’, but may not provide signal coverage from ground based NAVAIDs, ATC radar, or commutations

MSA

A

Minimum Safe/Sector Altitude found on approach plates and provides 1000’ terrain clearance within 22NM of the airport, used for emergency purposes
