A foil is where characteristics contrast that of the main protagonist
Who is Bernard?
Bernard is a serious, studious and ambitious character, who idolised Biff in his teenage years
How does Willy act towards Charley?
He is jealous of Charley and he only seems appreciative of what he’s done for him once
How does Willy describe Charley?
As “liked, but he’s not- well liked”, which is contradictory as he is successful and protects Willy with money
What does Charley giving Willy money say about his character?
He is a good man with common sense, despite him having personal failings and not “being able to put up a ceiling” as Willy states
What is Charley’s view of Biff and Willy’s relationship?
Bernard and Charley both know that Biff is the root of Willy’s unhappiness and Charley suggests Willy should forget about Biff

What are Charley and Bernard representative of?
A normal relationship and the contrast of Willy and Biff’s. They have great achievements though don’t brag about them, which contrasts the Loman’s arguing stories of success
How does Bernard contrast Biff in mobile concurrency?
He tries to persuade Biff to study for maths, though Willy calls him an “anaemic”, meaning weak and feeble
