(Period known as Personal Rule).

Will Laud Archbishop Of Canterbury. Brings in reforms like Catholicism.
1634
Charles expands ‘Ship Money’ Tax without consulting Parliament.
1637
Leading Purtians William Prynne, Henry Burton and John Batswick are mutilated for criticising Laud’s Reforms.
1637-1639
Charles tries to inroduce a new prayer book to the Scots, they don’t like this, they fight him and them destroy him.
1640
He calls Parliament to pay for the damages from the Scottish, they complain to him about the past 11 years, he sends them away, the Scottish situation gets worse so he calls them back, they stay in session until 1660.
(Period called ‘Long Parliament’).
1641
Parliament passes the Triennial Act, which means the King has to call them more.
October 1641
Violence breaks out between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland, Charles tries to raise money to fund an army to deal with the issue, but Parliament signs the Grand Remonstrance - a list of complaints about Charles.
January 1642
Charles tries to arrest 5 MPs under his suspicion of their plotting against him. He failed and had to flee London.
August 1642
Charles raises his Royal Flag, ‘Standard’, in Nottingham to summon an Army to fight Parliament - the Civil War begins.
