Q

Why were radical reforming groups attracted to Lutheranism

A

Luther’s belief in sola fide and sola scriptura directly criticised the ‘traditions’ that were not in the NT e.g Indulgences, role of the papacy, some sacraments. This inspired those who wanted to take his reforming ideas even further

Q

Why were townspeople attracted to Lutheranism?

A

2 developments laid the groundwork for Luther:
- clerical privileges were highly reserved
- sermons were of especially poor quality
Luther’s ideas put more money into the pockets of merchants and provided the literate with freedom to read the Word of God
