Q

Lady Bird Lake

A

First things first: Lady Bird Lake isn’t really a “lake” at all. It’s actually a section of the Colorado River — but not the Colorado River most people think of. This one’s entirely in Texas, not the famous river that flows through the Grand Canyon!
Locals used to call it Town Lake back in the day. In 2007, it was renamed Lady Bird Lake to honor Lady Bird Johnson, who helped make it such a beautiful, recreational spot for Austin.

Q

Chili’s at 45th and Lamar

A

It’s kind of a local Austin internet meme. Austin had such a huge flux of new people arriving, and a lot of people would get on Reddit and similar sites and just say I’m new here, what are the good restaurants. Without really researching any review sites or any specifying what part of town they were in or what cuisine they like. So, as kind of a troll response, locals started saying the Chili’s on 45th and Lamar was the best spot in town.

Q

Moonlight towers

A

The towers were erected in the 1895, and there’s a lot of speculation that they were a result of the Servant Girl Annhilator, a series of killings a decade earlier that are one of the first konwn instances of serial killings, even before Jack the Ripper. Most historians will tell you there’s no direct link, since the killings happened 10 years earlier and many cities were installing better lighting and modern infrastructre.
