Charging by Induction Flashcards

1
Q

What is Charging by Induction?

A

One object is already charged and one is neutral

The charged object comes near the neutral object WITHOUT touching

Shifts electrons and induces (creates) a temporary charge in the neutral object

Q

What happens during Charging by Contact?

A

Polarization is the separation of charges into two opposite sides, or poles.

When a negative rod is brought near an electroscope:

Electrons in the electroscope ball move down into the leaves, because they are repelled by the negative rod.

The leaves of the electroscope will spread apart because like charges repel each other.

Once the negative rod is removed, the electroscope becomes neutral again, and the leaves come back together.

Q

What is grounding?

A

Grounding an object means letting electrons flow out, usually by connecting it to the ground with a wire.

When a polarized electroscope is grounded:

Electrons move away from the electroscope because of the negative rod.

Some electrons leave the electroscope and go into the ground.

Once the ground connection is removed, the electroscope is left with a positive charge, and the leaves will repel each other.
