This links to other religious imagery but also emphasises his iconic status that even his untidy house glows.

This is what Stephen says and shows that the man in the Barns is very different to the pilot - as far away from war hero as he could be. He is a desperate sick broken individual with no status in society and would be court marshalled it he tried to get back.
Later when he sees Milly’s pushchair outside Keith house. He hears the voice of the man whispering his name “ I close my mind to the memory.”(Ch 10 p 207)
Stephen denies that Uncle Peter and the man at the barn are the same man. Stefan wonders if he really failed to recognise him or refused to recognise him.

He still uses pilots bravura about him and understatement when describing his plight. - but mentions despair more as he relaxes and says he imagines himself speeding away on on every one of them.

He cannot bring himself to say his wife’s name but is desperate to leave something for Bobs and fixes on the silk map as the only thing he can leave and the phrases forever both of which S fails to deliver.
