Q

Lake Elizabeth Park

A

In March 2002 Soraya, Amir, and Sohrab visited the lake to celebrate the first day of spring, and the Afghan New Year’s day. There was kite running at the gathering, and Amir offered to fly a kite for Sohrab, and ended up telling him about how him and Hassan used to fly kites when they were young. When they cut down the opposing kite, Amir decided to run it for Sohrab, calling out, “for you, a thousand times over,” making him smile for the first time since they were in Islamabad.

20
Q

The pomegranate tree

A

A symbol of Amir and Hassans friendship, the place where they carved “Amir and Hassan, Sultans of Kabul” into it. When Amir used the pomegranates to hurt Hassan in order to get a reaction out of him, he was destroying the last “fruit” of their friendship, proven by how the tree never bears fruit after Hassan’s rape because of the divide it put between the boys.

21
Q

Shah Faisal Mosque

A

The biggest mosque in the world, somethingthat caught Sohrab’s eye as soon as they got to Islamabad. When Sohrab runs away from Amir and his hotel room, Amir finds him there and talks to him about forgetting his parents, how it’s natural, then Amir gives him the polaroid of Hassan and Sohrab that Rahim Khan gave him. Amir comforts Sohrab about what he did to get them out of Assef’s grip, and that he isn’t dirty because of the sexual abuse he suffered while Assef was holding him. Amir asks if he wants to go to America with him.
