Rochester used to be an underground rail road in which slaves would go to escape between 1840- 1860 , yet regarding Bertha and the possibility of her being a slave in the past , Rochester’s marriage to her would be a possibility of freedom but instead enforces more confinement. Jane eyre was written in 1847 which makes me wonder whether the connotation between names was a purposeful move by Brontë to depict the dehumanised way in which Rochester treat Bertha
