Who is Aeneas?
The hero of the story. Leader of Trojan refugees. Married to king Priam’s daughter, Cruesa. He is son of mortal Anchises and goddess Venus.
Who is Achates?
A Trojan warrior and Aneas’ friend/companion
Who is Anchises?
Aeneas’ father. He symbolises the old ways.
Who is Anna?
Dido’s sister.
Who is Ascanius?
The son of Aeneas and Cruesa. Also known as Iulus. He symbolises the future of the roman race. He is significant because he founds the family that the Ceasars claims decent from.
Who is Cruesa?
Wie of Aeneas and daughter of King Priam.
Who is Deiphobus?
Son of King Priam. Married Helen when his brother Paris was killed. Killed by Menelaus (Helens Greek husband). Aeneas meets his shade in the underworld.
Who is Dido?
Daughter of Phoenician King. Queen of Carthage. Dido is a title ‘Valiant woman’. Her real name is Elissa. Was married to Sychaeus.
Who is Helen?
The most beautiful woman of her time. Originally married to King Menelaus.
Who is Laocoon?
A Trojan priest of Neptune who warns that the Greek wooden horse is a trap. His warnings go unheeded and he is killed by a serpent.
Who is Lavinia?
Daughter of King Latinus and Queen Amata, leaders of the Latins. She is beautiful, widely sought after and betrothed to Turnus.
Who is Misenus?
A companion of Aeneas who was drowned and had to be buried before Aeneas could descend into the underworld.
Who is Palinurus?
A helmsman of Aeneas’ ship. He falls overboard and drowns. Aeneas meets him in the underworld and promises him a proper burial.
Who is Priam?
King of Troy who is killed on the last night of Troy.
Who is the Sibyl?
A prophetess and priestess of Apollo. She is also called Diephobe. She escorts Aeneas to the underworld.
Who is Sinon?
A Greek spy who tricks the Trojans into taking the wooden horse into the city.
Who is Sychaeus?
Prince of Tyre, first husband of Dido, was murdered by Pygmalion (Didos brother).
Who is Aeolis?
God of the winds. He caused a storm that scattered the Trojans fleet of ships in book 1.
Who is Charon?
An old river guide, who transport dead souls across the river Styx to the underworld of Hades.
Who is Cupid?
God of love, son of Venus who looks like a young child. Causes Dido to fall in love with Aeneas at Venus’ prompting.
What is fate/destiny?
The power that controlled the universe, the gods and the humans. Jupiter and the Olympians were subordinate to it. In the Aeneid, Jupiter is privy to its secrets and at times appears to be fate.
Who is Juno?
Queen of the Gods, wife of Jupiter.
Who is Jupiter?
King of the Gods and humans.
Who is Neptune?
God of the sea. Friend of the Trojans.
Who is Pluto?
God of the underworld.
Who is Venus?
Goddess of love, beauty and fertility. Mother of Aeneas.
Who is Mercury?
Messenger of the Gods.
Who is Minerva?
Goddess of wisdom. Friend of the Greeks.
