Kathy in chapter 1(describe)
Welcoming. She engages the readers form chapter1 as she talks a both her career (being a carer) and her age also. As well as this, Kathy goes on to talk about hailsham giving the reader clues and thoughts towards this ‘hailsham’ place.
My name is [……………..], I’ve been a carer now for over 11 years
Kathy H , I’m 31 years old
Kathy reassures tommy by:
Accompany him when he had the tantrum. ‘Tommy your nice shirt. You’ll get it messed .’This has connotations of romance and empathy within it because she’s thinking about another person apart from herself.caring and calming down tommy as very other student laughed at him. This caring and accompany shows hints to why she became this carer in the future as from a young age she showed empathy to tommy.
Kathy being arrogant?
‘Their recovery times have always been impressive’
After all, i am a hailsham student’
Kathy begins to show unkindness towards others in her friendship groups.
‘I remember one night, when we were furious with Marge K[…] we chose to punish her by hauling her out of bed, holding her face against the window pane and ordering her to look at the woods’ Ishiguro uses imperative verbs such as : hauling and ordering. These are powerful commands and these could be both seen to be intimidating to Marge k as she has no freedom because of everyone taunting her.
The woods …
Are a symbol and possess both dark and negative connotations. Before Kathy describes the taunting act towards Marge k, she talks about the woods and how deeply dark they really are , by telling the reader that the people who are waiting for eventual suicide go their. By describing the woods as this, Kathy and her friendship group were taunting Marge k into killing herself. By pinning her up against the window looking out to the woodland.
