Raphael
Rapheal finds the bag at the start of the story. He is best friends with Gardo (they are like brothers). He was interigated and tortured in in a police station because of the bag which changes him completely. From then on, he has nightmares and is a lot more fearful and more cautious.
Gardo
This is Raphael’s best friend and protector. He is way more cautious and more serious then Raphael, he is also like a fighter. We believe that he has a hard childhood. He convinced Sister Olivia to take him to colva prison to see Gabriel Olondiz.
Jun Jun (Rat)
He is originally not from Behala dumpsite. We learn that he travelled alone from an island in the south of the country to earn money when he was 8 years old. He lives in a hole under the trash heap – a very dangerous place. There is also hundreds of rats living with him, this is where he got he nickname from. He has very thin arms and pencil-like teeth. We soon learn that he is not quite as desperate as he seems – he has saved a lot of money and his plan is to return to Sampalo and fish. He forges good relationships with both Father Juilliard and Sister Olivia who both give him money. He is also a very quick and sneeky character.
Senator Zapanta
We never actually git to see this character’s point of view but we can tell that he is the villain of the story. He is a corrupt politician who has pocketed millions meant for the poor. He lives in a mansion in the rich part of the city. When the story ends, unfortunatelly he is still in power.
Father Juilliard
He is the character who ‘puts all the stories together’. A kind, generous priest who has been running in the Pascal Aguila Mission school in Behala for 7 years. He helps up the biys in finding the money.
Sister Olivia
She is a 22 year old at the mission school. Whilst travelling the world after university she visited Behala and decided to stay and help. Like Father Juilliard, she is kind and generous and feels particularly sorry for Rat. She is also willing to spend a lot of money to buy Gardo clothes and gain entrance to the prison. Due to her involvement in the events of the story, she is deported.
Jose Angelico
He is a house boy at Senator Zapanta’s house, he waits many years to get revenge on him for his grandfather, Gabriel Olondiz. He dies at the hands of the police during an interrogation, but manages to throw away the clues to the money before they get to him.
Gabriel Olondriz
Thai is the adopted grandfather of Jose Angelico, Olondiz discovered that Zapanta stole from the poor.In trying to bring about justice, Olondriz finds himself in jail for the rest of his life. He is symbol of goodness in a corrupt system.
Pia Dante
Pia is Jose’s Angelico’s daughter. She is left orphaned when he dies. She waits for her father to pick her up at Naravo cometary for two weeks so when the boys find her she is starving and dirty and still in her school uniform. She goes with the boys to Sampalo at the end of the story.
Raphael’s Aunt
She accidentaly hints to the police that Raphael found something in the trash and because of this Raphael is eventually tortured in a police station. She cautions the boys about what they are doing and is very afraid of the police.
Marco
This is a prison guard who asks the boys for money in exchange for Gabriel Olondriz’s bible. He ultimately betrays the boys by telling the police.
