Antihero
Protagonist who doesnt exhibit the qualities of a traditional hero. Instead of being admirable or grand but is ordinary or even petty or criminal
Antagonist
Character pitted against the protagonist. Often the villan
Caricature
Exaggeration or other distortion of an individuals prominant features or characteristics that make them seem ridiculous
Characterization
Refers to the various means by which an author describes and develops the characters in a literary work
Comic relief
Homorous scene or passage inserted into an otherwise serious work. Often in form of character
Confidant
Character who plays only a minir role but serves the protagonist as a trusted friend to whom she or he confess intimate thoughts, problems, and feelings
Dialect
Way of speaking or using language that is particular to a geographic region or social group that varies considerably from the predominant speech and usage within the language
Dialogue
Conversation between characters
Dichotomy
The splitting of a whole into two non-overlapping parts. Often used to examine conflicting attitudes or behaviors
Epithet
Adjective or phrase applied to a character to accentuate a particular characteristic
Flat character
Character that does not undergo any significant emotional, ideological or spiritual transformation
Foil
Character whose contrast with the protagonist serves to accentuate the portagonists qualities or characters
Hubris
Excessive pride that often leads to a characters downfall
Monologue
Extended narrative delivered uninterrupted and exclusively by one person
Protagonist
Main character often the hero but not exclusively so
