Characteristics of Scripture Flashcards
Define Authority
All the words in Scripture are God’s words, in such a way that to disobey or disbelieve any word of Scripture is to disobey or disbelieve God himself.
Define Clarity
Scripture is written in such a way that it’s teachings are able to be understood by all who will read it seeking God’s help and being willing to follow it.
Define Sufficiency
Scripture contained all the words God intended it to have at each stage of redemptive history, and it now contains everything we need God to tell us for salvation, for trusting him perfectly, and obeying him perfectly.
Define Necessity
The Bible is necessary for knowing the gospel, for maintaining spiritual life, and for knowing God’s will, but not necessary for knowing God exists, or for knowing certain things about his character and moral laws.
Define Inerrancy (this isn’t an official characteristic of Scripture)
Scripture, in the original manuscripts, does not affirm anything that is contrary to fact.
Give 2 Scriptures to support Authority.
All Scripture is breathed out by God and is profitable for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness. (2 Timothy 3:16)If anyone thinks he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. (1 Corinthians 14:37)
Give 2 Scriptures to support Inerrancy (this not an official characteristic).
The words of the Lord are flawless; like silver in a furnace on the ground, purified seven times. (Psalm 12:6)Sanctify them in truth; for your word is truth. (John 17:17)(All graphe is theopneustos) 2 Tim 3:16 + (It is impossible for God to lie) Hebrews 6:18 = Inerrant
