The use and study of simultaneous pitches. Refers to “vertical aspect” of music as distinguished from melody or “horizontal aspect”.
Harmony
Agreeable combo of pitches provides sense of resolution or relaxations.
Consonace
Combo of pitches that sounds unstable usually creating a desire of resolution chords.
Dissonance
Simultaneous sounding of three or more pitches. Study of harmony involves chord construction and chord progression.
Chord
Chord with three members. Western music based on major and minor triads.
Triad
Describes way in which musical sounds are combined to create overall sound of a musical work.
Texture
Quality of a sound which distinguishes it from another, AKA tone color.
Timbre
Single melodic line with no accompaniment.
Monophony
Two or more voices with different melodic lines occurring simultaneously, all with equal importance.
Polyphony
Occurs when single voice takes over melodic interest while an accompaniment part takes a subordinate role. Most common texture in western music: melody and accompaniment.
Homophony
Organizing shape or design of a piece of music.
