Characteristics Of Living Things Flashcards
Movement?
It must move look for legs, a tail etc
What are the seven things a living thing must show?
MRS NERG: Movement Reproduction Sensitivity Nutrition Excretion Respiration Growth
Reproduction?
Can it produce offspring?
Sensitivity?
Does it react if something touches it?
Nutrition?
Does it need food to live?
Excretion?
Does it let off waste?
Respiration?
Does it have energy ie is it moving?
Growth?
Is if growing?
Use paper to draw an animal cell
Labels should be:
Nucleus
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
Extra- mitochondria
Use paper to draw a plant cell
Labels should be: Cell wall Cell membrane Cytoplasm Vacuole Nucleus Chloroplasts Mitochondria
Main plant organs?
Leaf
Flower
Stem
Root
Which part of the plant contains the reproductive organs?
The flower
Explain why the leaf is adapted to being the main organ to have the parts needed for photosynthesis.
It has a large surface area to absorb a lot of nutrients
It’s green because it contains lots of chloroplast which contain the green chemical chlorophyll
List 8 organ systems
Muscular Nervous Skeletal Digestive Immune Urinary Circulatory Respiratory
Which organ system takes in oxygen and releases carbon dioxide
Respiratory
What is the job of the rib cage?
It protects the lungs
Which is the strongest bone in the human body?
Femur- all the weight from the upper part of your body rests on them.
Explain how bone is adapted for its job
The outer layer is made of calcium carbonate which makes the bone extremely strong
How are Polar Bears adapted for living in the Arctic?
- they have a thick layer of blubber which insulates them.
- their skin is black which absorbs heat
- their fur is tubes which trap air for insulation also.
- their rounded shape gives them a smaller surface area which reduces the amount of heat loss.
How are cacti adapted for the desert?
- they lost their leaves to reduce to help them from losing water as the desert is hot and DRY.
- they have a swollen stem that can store water for an extremely long time.
- they have sounds to prevent predators from eating them.
What does a kidney do?
A kidney filters the toxic waste in your blood which produces urine.
What does the heart do?
It pumps blood around the body
What does the brain do?
The brain controls walking, talking, breathing, our heart rate, walking, swallowing, our senses and so on.
What do the loungs do?
They take carbon dioxide from your body and exchange it for oxygen.
