What are eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells?
Eukaryotic cells are complex and include all animal and plant cells
Prokaryotic cells are smaller and simpler e.g. bacteria
What is the nucleus?
Contains the genetic material that controls the cell’s activities.
What is the cytoplasm?
A gel-like substance where most of the cell’s chemical reactions happen. It contains enzymes to control these reactions.
What are ribosomes?
Small organelles where proteins are made in the cell
What are mitochondria?
Small organelles where aerobic respiration takes place. Respiration transfers energy that the cells need
What are cell membranes?
Forms the outer surface of the cell and controls the substances that go in and out
What are chloroplasts?
Photosynthesis happens here. They contain chlorophyll which is used in photosynthesis
What is the vacuole?
A large organelle that contains cell sap (a solution of salts and sugars). It helps to support the cell.
What is the cell wall?
A rigid structure made of cellulose, which surrounds the cell membrane. It supports and strengthens the cell.
What are the levels of organisation?
There are organelles in cells
Similar cells make up tissues
Tissues are organised into organs
Organs make up organ systems
Give an example of a tissue
Xylem and phloem tissues in plants
Give an example of an organ
Lungs in mammals and leaves in plants
Give an example of an organ system
In mammals the digestive system is made up of organs including the stomach, intestines, pancreas and liver
