Respiration
Chemical reactions that break down molecules in living cells to release energy.
Irritability/Sensitivity
The ability to detect changes in the environment and react to them.
Nutrition
The taking in of nutrients - organic molecules and mineral ions - to provide raw materials for growth, repair and reproduction.
Growth and Development
The processes by which an organism changes in size and form.
Excretion
The removal from organisms of toxic materials, waste products of metabolism and substances in excess of requirements.
Reproduction
The process that makes new organisms of the same species as the parent(s).
Movement
Moving in response to external stimuli. Not always considered a characteristic of life.
