Characteristics of Life Vocab Flashcards
Biology
The study of life
Organization
Having some type of order where cells must work together
Cell
The smallest living unit of an organism
Unicellular
One Cell organism
Multicellular
2 or more cells
Organ
A part in the body like the kidney or heart that does a specific task for that organism
Tissue
Thin layer of skin under the exterior skin
Organelle
Its like the organ of a cell, it is a part of the cell that performs a specific task
Biological Molecule
Molecules in the body that contain carbon and are the building blocks of organic compounds
Homeostasis
The ability to maintain a stable internal environment
Metabolism
The sum of all chemical reactions in an organism
Cell Division
When cells multiply and create copies of themselves
Development
Maturing as time goes by
Reproduction
Creating an offspring weather it be sexual or asexual
Gene
A segment of DNA that controls a characteristic of an organism
Virus
A microscopic organism that infects a host cells
Ecology
The study of relationships between different organisms and their environments
Ecosystem
An environment that consist of multiple species of organisms that live together
Evolution
The change in a species over time
Adaptation
An organisms ability to stabilize their self mental or physically in an unfamiliar environment
Hypothesis
A testable assumption or question based upon an observation
Prediction
To predict something, like a forecast / an if - then statement
Experiment
A test or procedure done to figure something out or discover something
Control group
A group of something like humans that are not tempered with to receive answers for an experiment
Experimental group
A group of something that is tempered with to receive answers for an experiment
Independent variable
A variable that stands alone in an experiment or procedure that inst effected
Dependent variable
A variable in an experiment or procedure that is effected or tested
Theory
A belief or like a hypothesis that usually needs to be tested
