Characteristics Of Life Flashcards
What are the features of living things
Movement
Respiration
Sensitivity
Growth
Reproduction
Excretion
Nutrition
Movement
Organisms move in order to get food, light, water etc.
Respiration
Organisms break down food to receive energy.
Sensitivity
How organisms react to stimuli
Growth
Organisms increase in size during favourable conditions
Reproduction
Organisms form other organisms of the same type. One (asexual reproduction) or two (sexual reproduction) parents are involved in this.
Excretion
How organisms get rid of metabolic waste that they don’t need
Nutrition
: How organisms absorb food and nutrients to receive energy. Autotrophs make their own food, while heterotrophs get their food from other living things.
Organisation
Organisms are made up of cells. Groups of these cells work together to make tissues and organs that carry out specialised functions.
Response
The interaction between an organism and its environment
Metabolism
: All of the chemical reactions in an organism.
Continuity of life
All organisms arise from other organisms of the same type by reproduction.
Life
an organism has ‘life’ if it is organised, requires nutrition, carries out excretion, is capable of responding to the environment and reproducing.
