Characteristics of Life Flashcards
Organisms are highly-organized, coordinated structures that have one or more cells.
for single-celled: cell, atoms, molecules, organelles, etc.
multicellular: atom, molecule, organelle, cell, tissue, organ, organ system, organism
Order
How organisms respond to different stimuli
Sensitivity
move away or towards chemicals
Chemotaxis
move away or towards light
Phototaxis
movement towards the stimulus
Positive response
movement away from the stimulus
Negative response
Organisms require multiple regulatory mechanisms to coordinate internal functions, respond to stimuli, and cope with environmental stresses.
Regulation
The ability of an organism to maintain constant internal conditions.
Homeostasis
the ability of an organism to keep its internal body temperature steady (ex. polar bears having body structures that help them conserve body heat)
Thermoregulation
All organisms follow specific instructions coded for by their genes to grow and develop.
Growth and Development
single-celled: duplicate their DNA and divide equally as the cell prepares to form two new cells
multicellular: produce specialized reproductive germline cells that will form new individuals
Reproduction
All organisms use a source of energy for their metabolic activities; some use the energy from the sun while some use chemical energy in molecules as food.
Energy Processing
Individuals with traits that contribute to reproduction and survival in that particular will leave more offspring.
