characteristics of life Flashcards
Nutrition
Getting materials and changing them into usable form.
Transport
The movement of materials within the cells or throughout an organism.
Respiration
Chemical reactions that release energy for life activities.
Excretion
Getting rid of harmful, metabolic, cellular wastes.
Regulation
Control and coordination of activities, allows organisms to respond to changes.
Synthesis
Production of complex substances from simpler substances.
Growth
Increase in size and/or number of cells in an organism.
Reproduction
The production of new individuals.
Metabolism
The chemical activities of an organism.
Homeostasis
A stable internal balance.
Biology
The study of life.
Stimulus
An internal or external event which generates nervous system activity or response from an organism.
Response
An action of behavior linked to a stimulus.
Autotroph
An organism that makes its own food. Usually converts energy from the sun into sugar.
Heterotroph
An organism that depends on other’s complex organic substances for nutrition.
