What is an affective disorder?
Categorised by dramatic changes in mood with damaging impact on capacity to function.
What is an example of an affective disorder?
Major depressive disorder.
Symptoms of depression?
- Depressed mood
- Loss of interest
- Insomnia
- Fatigue
- Recurrent thoughts of death
5 or more symptoms need to be present for the same 2 week period.
What is a psychotic disorder?
Abnormal thinking and perceptions where individuals lose touch with reality.
What are delusions?
False beliefs that hinder ability to function.
What are hallucinations?
False perceptions where auditory hallucinations are most common.
What is schizophrenia?
A long term mental condition with disturbances that persist for at least 6 months.
What is an anxiety disorder?
An excessive and persistent fear or anxiety.
What is a specific phobia?
An extreme and irrational phobia that produces a physiological response like sweating.
What are the 5 types of phobia?
Animal, environment, blood-injection-injury, situational and other.
What are the symptoms of a phobia?
- Excessive, strong and persistent fear.
- Phobic stimulus almost immediately provokes a response.
- Interferes with routine, relationships and social activities.
