what is a phobia?
- irrational, extreme fear of objects or situations (social)
examples of phobias:
- arachnophobia= spiders
- claustrophobia= confined spaces
behavioural characteristics of phobias:
- avoidance
- panic
- failure to function
what is avoidance?
- physically adapting normal behaviour to avoid phobic objects
what is panic?
- uncontrollable physical response
- most likely to happen at presence of phobic object
what is failure to function?
- difficulty in taking part in activities required to perform a normal life
emotional characteristics of phobias:
- anxiety
- fear
what is anxiety (phobias)?
- uncomfortably high and persistent state of arousal, making it difficult to relax
- heightened anxiety when the individual is likely to encounter the phobia
what is fear (phobia)?
- intense emotional state
- linked to fight-or-flight response
- sensation of extreme and unpleasant alertness in the presence of the phobia
- only subsides when phobic object is removed
cognitive characteristics of phobias:
- irrational thoughts (fears)
- reduced cognitive capacity
what are irrational thoughts (fears)?
- negative and irrational mental processes
- exaggerated belief in the harm th phobic object could cause
what is reduced cognitive capacity?
- people with a phobia cant concentrate on day-to-day activities like work
- excessive attentional focus on the phobic objects
- constant concerns about potential danger they’re in
what is depression?
- a mood disorder
- constant and long lasting sense of sadness
behavioural characteristics of depression:
- reduction in activity levels
- change in eating behaviour
- increases aggression
what is a reduction in activity levels?
- lethargy
- lacking energy needed to perform everyday activities
what is anhedonia?
- lack of pleasure usually felt doing enjoyable activities
- leading to reduction in social behaviour
what is a change in eating behaviour?
- often results in significant weight gain or weight loss
what is an increase in aggression?
- aggression towards other people
- can also take form as self harm

- sadness
- guilt
what is sadness?
- persistent, very low mood
what is guilt?
- helplessness
- feeling that they have no value in comparison to other people
what is lack of concentration?
- cant give their full attention to tasks
- indecisive in decision making
cognitive characteristics of depression:
- lack of concentration
- negative schemas
what are negative schemas?
- automatic negative biases when thinking about themselves, the world and the future
