Characteristics And Classification Of Living Organisms Flashcards
What does RINGER stand for?
Respiration Irritability (sensitivity +includes movement) Nutrition (the taking in of nutrients) Growth Excretion Reproduction
Why is classification important?
Conservation- the management of breeding in certain species
Understanding evolutionary relationships- discovering shared features in differently classes organisms.
How is a dichotomous key used?
There are a series of yes/ no questions and you answer each question relating to the organism in question, then eventually you will reach a specific species
What are the five kingdoms?
Prokaryote Protoctistans Plants Fungi Animals
What is the sequence of classification?
Kingdom Phylum Class Order Family Genus Species
How does DNA or protein structure help classification?
DNA- closely related organisms have similar genes/DNA structures
Protein Structure- closely related organisms have similar amino acid sequences in their proteins
What is the controversy of viruses for classification?
Viruses do not complete all of the life processes, so they do not belong in any of the kingdoms. Some say they should be in a sixth kingdom.
What is an autotroph?
An organism that manufactures its own food molecules from simple, inorganic sources eg. Plants
What are the invertebrate groups?
Nematodes eg. Hookworms
Annelids eg. Earthworm
Molluscs eg. Snail
What are the arthropod animals?
Crustacea eg. Crabs
Insects eg. Housefly
Myriapods eg. Centipede
Arachnids eg. Spiders
What are the vertebrate groups?
Fish Amphibians Reptiles Birds Mammals
