increased heart rate, blood pressure, temperature. pupils dilate. can have long term affect on immune system , heart
psychological response
depends on perception of stressor. transactional model of stress. primary appraisal - is it a threat. secondary appraisal - do i have the resources to cope. neg appraisal leads to stress. low self esteem, unhealthy coping mechanisms - smoking, drinking. insomnia
acute stress
response to short term threat/sudden stressor. e.g. dog running in front of car.
episodic acute stress
repeated instances of acute stressors. e.g. work meetings
chronic stress
long term or ongoing stress. feels they have no control. e.g. trapped in abusive relationship
