Characteristic Lesions Flashcards
Horse with diffuse chronic pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis (especially around colon)
Rhodococcus equi
Mineralization within the alveolar septae with pulmonary edema
Uremic pneumonitis
(one of many ulcerative lesions around body caused by chronic renal disease. Includes glossitis, gastritis, L atrium endocarditis, intercostal calcification, and mineralization and fibrosis of kidneys)
Pig: focal rectal stricture with mega colon
Salmonella typhimurium.
Thrombosis of cranial hemorrhoidal and caudal pudendal arteries
Calcinosis cutis
Hyperadrenocorticism= “Cushing’s”
Myxedema of the face, “tragic” appearance
Hypothyroidism. Often in dogs. Caused by deposition of mucopolysaccharides in dermis
Atherosclerosis of Coronary artery(ies)
Hypothyroidism. Chronic hypERcholesterolemia. Asymmetrical thickening of arterial wall.
Massive hepatic necrosis, pig
Hepatosis dietetica. From Vit E/ Selenium deficiency.
Causes icterus. Don’t confuse for nutmeg liver from CHF, no icterus associated with that
Liver grossly mottled red and gray, Nutmeg Liver
Nutmeg liver associated with chronic R-sided heart failure.
Blood backs up in vena cava, liver hypoxia, fatty change, necrosis, fibrous scarring.
Cow liver, black discoloration on liver surface and parenchymal cystic lesions.
Histo- eosinophilic granulomatous hepatosis
Fascioloides magna. Liver fluke. Black =poop from migrating larvae.
Liver fissures or fracture lines
Fracture of capsular surface, may involve parenchyma too. Caused by severe abdominal trauma.
- If ruptures, hemoperitoneum can be fatal
- Amyloidosis makes liver very fragile, susceptible to fractures
Vasculitis and thrombosis in blood vessels of ventral tongue
MDx= ulcerative glossitis
EDx=Uremic glossitis
MDx = multifocal nodular endocarditis of LEFT ATRIUM
EDx= Uremic endocarditis
Nodular valve cusps (on valves, not above valves in atrium)
Indicates endocardiosis (not endocarditis)
- Degenerative disease, degenerative valvular collagen
- Likely to see jet lesions with endocardiosis
Name the characteristic non-renal lesions of chronic renal disease
Think Uremia–> ulcerative lesions with mineralization
@ tongue = ulcerative/uremic glossitis
@ stomach = ulcerative, hemorrhagic gastritis with mineralization of mucosa
@ intercostal muscles = subpleural mineralization
@ heart = Left atrium nodular endocarditis
@ bone = fibrous osteodystrophy (esp. Jaw, rubber jaw)
@ lungs = pneumonopathy, mineralization of alveolar septae, edemic w/ pleural surface rib impressions
Rubber Jaw or fibrous osteodystrophy of mandible/maxilla
EDx- Renal fibrous osteodystrophy
Renal failure, hyperphosphatemia, increase PTH to increase calcemia, resorbs it from bone
