Character Terms Flashcards
Usually the principal character in opposition to the protagonist. Can also be a force of nature/society.
Antagonist
The central character or hero in a narrative or drama - usually the one with whom the audience tends to identify.
Protagonist
Characters who are described simply or are underdeveloped.
Flat Character
A character whose personality, background, motives, and other features are fully described by the author.
Round Character
A character who undergoes major changes as the plot unfolds.
Dynamic Character
A character who remains the same as the plot unfolds.
Static Character
The author tells you what a character is like.
Direct Characterization
You learn about a character through their actions and dialogue.
Indirect Characterization
Fears, conflicts, or needs that drive a character.
Motivation
A character who is used as a contrast to another character
Foil
