Q

What is a quote that supports Portia’s character of being Selfless and giving

A

Portia: Pay him six thousand, and deface the bond. Double six thousand, and then treble that, before a friend of this description shall lose a hair through Bassanio’s fault. First go to a church and call me wifr, and then away to Venice to your friend, for never shall you lie by Portia’s side with an unquiet soul. Q

What is a quote that supports Portia being Intelligent?

A

Mercy Speech, Portia: The quality of mercy is not strained. It droppeth as the gentle rain from the heaven upon the place beneath. It is twice blest; it blesseth him take gives and him that takes. ‘Tis mightiest; It becomes the throned monarch better then his crown: His sceptre shows the face of temporal power, the attribute to awe and majesty, wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings: But mercy is above this sceptured sway. It is enthroned in the heart of kings, it is an attribute to god himself: And earthly power doth then show likest god’s, when mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew, Though justice be thy plea, consider this, that in the course of justice none of us should seek salvation: we do pray for mercy: and that same prayer doth teach us all to render the deeds of mercy. (A4S1)

  • Portia to Shylock to seek his mercy
  • Reveals her skillis by appealing to his methodical mind (persuation, lagos), and focuses on careful process of reasoning, not emotion
  • Mercy would benefit Shylock
  • Would elevate him to a godlike status
  • Wrns that Shylock seeking justice without mercy may result in his domination.

Portia: This bond doth give thee here no jot of blood; the words expressly are ‘a pound of flesh’. Take then thy bonod, if thou dost shed one drop of Christian blood, thy lands and goods are by laws of Venice confiscate unto the state of Venice (cont.)
Shylock: I take this offer then, pay the bond thrice and let the Christian go
Portia: The jew shall have all justice. Soft, not haste, he shall have nothing but the penalty (A4S1)

-Shows that mercy speech, while seeming like an appeal, was actually an ultimatum, a final chance for Shylock to save himself before Portia crushes his legal arguments

Q

Character traits of Antonio

A
  1. Critical and unkind
  2. Prideful
  3. Naive
  4. Crafty
22

How is Antonio Critical and unkind?

A

In A1S3, he uses a mocking and scornful tone.
’ Was this inserted to make interest good?’
‘ Or is your gold and silver ewes and rams’

He trys to undermine Shylock’s profession by claiming how unatural the act of money lending is, with the comparison of his gold and silver being ewes and rams, showing critisism

23
Q

How is Antonio prideful?

A

Antonio’s response to Shylock’s sarcastic and mocking speech shows a complete lack of remorse for what he has done, and that he would do it again.
Shylock: ‘ what should i say to you? should i not say, does a dog have moneys? Can a cur lend three thousand ducats?’……….” Fair sir, you spat on me wednesday last, you call me a dog, and for these courtesies i’ll lend you thus much moneys?”

Antonio: “I am as like to call thee so again, to spit on thee again, to spurn thee again too”

Shylock says ‘ Why look how you storm1 I would be friends with you and have your love, forget the shames you have stained me with, supply your present wants, and take no doit of usance for my moneys, and you’ll not hear me. This is kind i offer.’ to placate Antoniointo a false sense of security.

Antonio shows his naivety in letting his guard down so easily and readily agrees, esp. after telling Bassanio about the ‘ villian with a smiling cheek’ and ‘goodly apple rotten at the heart’ . Ironically, he fails to listen to his own words and falls into Shylock’s trap.
He replies to shylock : “ there is much kindness in a jew”, sounding convinced that Shylock was being fully open about his intentions.

How is Antonio crafty?
Antonio: " So please my lord and duke and all the court, to quit the fine for one half of his goods, I am content, so he will let me have the other half in use to render it upon his death unto the gentleman that lately stole his daughter. Two things provided more; that for his favour he presently become Christian; the other, that he do a record gift here in the court, of all he dies possessed, unto his son Lorenzo and his daughter" (A4S1, Antonio) - When believed he was to die for his debt, Antonio acted like a tragic hero ready to accept his fate - When the court rules in his favour, Antonio grabs pmto this opportunity to get back at Shylock, where he feels fitting - Crafts a proposal designed to punush Shylock in the worst way possible, 1. make him a christian, 2. Force him to give up money
