Character - Jo Flashcards
Joseph thinks that after the war they will all be reunited. Child innocence as it’s not certain that they will all make it to the end of the war alive which will last longer than just a little while.
First time that one of the boys pick up on how the war will effect them as Jews and how they will be treated differently. Coming to the realisation that the star means unfair treatment.
Doesn’t see a problem with the star as it isn’t heavy so it won’t prevent him from playing etc. Is yet to learn about the trouble that comes with it.
«Pourquoi ça me gênerait? (35)
He has everything planned ready for when they are interrogated. Reassuring his brother that he knows what to say to get them free. Even someone so young can come up with a plan without making a mistake to get them caught.
They always look out for one another regardless of the situation they find themselves in.
Joseph doesn’t understand what it is to be Jewish
«C’est quoi, un juif?» (38)
After hearing what the other children have said about what Jews look like, he doesn’t think that he is a Jew considering that he looks nothing like that. Doesn’t understand yet.
Describing his marble like having the world in his hand
Desperately hoping that the teachers odd behaviour is a fluke and that nothing has actually changed. This isn’t the case.
Annoyed that he didn’t realise they’d passed the demarcation line and didn’t realise as everything looks the same. He’d been expecting Free France to look differently and was disappointed as Free France had seemed like a brilliant different place
They always look out for one another regardless of the situation they find themselves in
