Jack
Strong willed; older of most of the boys; leader of the hunters; longs for total power; becomes wild and cruel; represents the instinct of savagery
Ralph
Elected the leader; thinks about ways to get rescued; at the beginning, the boys respect Ralph but overtime Piggy is the only one to stay with Ralph; more civilized
Piggy
Ralph’s “lieutenant”; whinny; fat; wears glasses; has asthma
Sam and Eric
Twins; closely allied with Ralph; always together; sometimes called “Samneric”; known as a group called “Bigguns”; they fall victims to Jacks manipulation
Simon
Shy, sensitive boy; behaves kindly and is willing to work; has a deep feeling for being connected to nature; only character whose sense of morality hasn’t been imposed by society; represents natural goodness
Roger
Jacks “lieutenant”; cruel, older boy who brutalizes the littluns; murders Piggy by rolling a boulder onto him
The Officer
Officer who goes to the island and is appalled by the scene of the island
The Lord of the Flies
Name given to the pigs head that Jacks tribe killed and hung on a stick as an offer to the beast
