Character Analysis: Sheila Flashcards
Analyse:
She is directed to speak “ gaily, possessively”
adverbs reveal she complies to socially accepted roles of a woman, superficial interests.
Analyse:
“but these girl’s aren’t cheap labour -they’re people”
dismisses the metaphor to assert her alignment with Eva’s right to voice her needs
Analyse:
Sheila is the first to be aware of the inspector’s strategic manipulation. This is shown through her quotes; “ You mustn’t try to build up a wall between us and that girl. If you do, then the inspector will just break it down”
metaphor for the social division that deludes the upper classes into believing the lower classes are beyond understanding or have equal rights and feelings.
Analyse:
“ Why- you fool-he knows”
Sheila yet again is ware of the inspector’s ability to see through their facades. Language of insult exaggerated by the dash.
Analyse:
“ astounded” “ astonished” “stung”
stage directions use adjectives to reveal her inner reflection and recoil.
Analyse:
“ No, he’s giving us the rope-so we’ll hang ourselves”
visual imagery uses analogy of hanging, since the inspector is holding them morally accountable. After leading the accusations, he verbally withdraws, creating a state of confession which is self driven by all the characters, they incriminate themselves.
