Protagonist
The main character in a work, often a hero or heroine, but not always.
Antagonist
Opposes the protagonist
Bildungsroman
A novel that explores the maturation of the protagonist
Epiphany
An “aha” Moment
Round characters
When characters change throughout the story and display a wide variety of emotions.
Flat Characters
Characters that stay the same throughout the whole novel.
Stock Characters
May provide comic relief or simply prevent an author from having to explain their traits.
Direct Characterization
The narrator describing the physical appearances of some main characters.
Indirect Characterization
We learn about the characters by what they do.
Foil
The characters traits illuminate of highlight those of the protagonist.
