What are two ways you should not start speech?

What are the five things a good introduction is supposed to do?
Get the audiences attention, give the audience a reason to listen, introduce the subject, establish your credibility, preview your main ideas
Why should you strive for favorable attention in your introduction?
Because if your audience likes you then they will be more likely to listen to you. If they don’t like you and they won’t listen to you.
What are two ways to establish your credibility?
Eye contact, and being prepared
Why are illustrations/anecdotes so effective as an introduction?
Because they get you out of your head and into your gut. They make you feel. They or easier to remember.
Why are starling facts/statistics so effective as introductions?
They get your attention. Example – the disease that gave you ED
What do you need to remember about using humor and a speech? And why?
Don’t use it! Because “humor does not belong in a speech!”
Why do you need to be careful with using questions/rhetorical questions in your speech?
To summarize, provide closure

A pause, a change and facial expression, and altered vocal pitch.
Why do you need to be careful of using historical events in your introduction?
If it happened so long ago that people don’t understand what you’re talking about then your information is bad
Why do you need to be careful of using recent events in your speech?
Because nobody’s paying attention to current events
Why are personal references so powerful in your speech?
Because if it hits closer to home it seems more realistic
Why doesn’t affect of speech need as good a conclusion as it does an introduction?
Because if your speech isn’t consistently good but it might as will not be good at all
What are two things a good conclusion provides?
Closure and summarization
