Appalled

Definition: to fill or overcome with horror, consternation, or fear; dismay.
My Sentence: He was appalled at the sight of him standing there.
Theorem
Book Sentence: “Ralph answered in the cautious voice of one who rehearses a theorem.”
Definition: a theoretical proposition, statement, or formula embodying something to be proved from other propositions or formulas.
My Sentence: The person on the podium recited his lines as if was rehearsing a theorem.
Leviathon
Book Sentence: “Then the sleeping leviathan breathed out, the waters rose, the weed streamed, and the water boiled over the table rock with a roar.”
Definition: a sea monster.
My Sentence: The leviathan is a mythical sea monster.
Clamor
Book Sentence: “The conch was silent, a gleaming tusk; Ralph’s face was dark with breathlessness and the air over the island was full of bird-clamor and echoes ringing.”
Definition: a loud uproar, as from a crowd of people.
My Sentence: Their was a very loud clamor outside the house.
Mutinously
Book Sentence: “Mutinously, the boys fell silent or muttering.”
Definition: disposed to, engaged in, or involving revolt against authority.
My Sentence: Mutinously the crowd fell silently when the announcer began to start talking.
Coverts
Book Sentence: “If you could shut your ears to the slow suck down of the sea and boil of the return, if you could forget how dun and unvisited were the ferny coverts on either side, then there was a chance that you might put the beast out of mind and dream for a while.”
Definition: concealed; secret; disguised.
My Sentence: He was covert under all of the pillows surrounding him.
Crestfallen
Book Sentence: “I don’t remember this cliff,” said Jack, crestfallen, “so this must be the bit of the coast I missed.”
Definition: dejected; dispirited; discouraged.

My Sentence: He was crestfallen that she didn’t want to be his girlfriend.
Glowered
Book Sentence: Jack glowered
Definition: to look or stare with sullen dislike, discontent, or anger.
My Sentence: She glowered at him from all the way across the room after blaming him for the spill
Daunting
Book Sentence: “The word was too good, too bitter, too successfully daunting to be repeated.”
Definition: to overcome with fear; intimidate.
My Sentence: They were daunting spiders, but it didn’t work.
Impervious
Book Sentence: “So they sat, the rocking, tapping, impervious Roger and Ralph, fuming; round them the close sky was loaded with stars, save where the mountain punched up a hole of blackness.”
Definition: not permitting penetration or passage; impenetrable.
My Sentence: The castles defenses were impervious to any types of attacks.
Prefect
Book Sentence: “He isn’t a prefect and we don’t know anything about him.”
Definition: a person appointed to any of various positions of command, authority, or superintendence, as a chief magistrate in ancient Rome or the chief administrative official of a department of France or Italy.
My Sentence: He was the prefect of the group called the Hunters
Rebuke
Book Sentence: “Piggy gave up the attempt to rebuke Ralph.”
Definition: to express sharp, stern disapproval of; reprove; reprimand.
My Sentence: He rebuked the thought of having to hate her for the rest of his life.
Demure
Book Sentence: “Each of them wore the remains of a black cap and ages ago they had stood in two demure rows and their voices had been the song of angels.”
Definition: characterized by shyness and modesty; reserved.
My Sentence: The little children were into demure lines attentive.
Fervor
Book Sentence: “If Jack was astonished by their fervor he did not show it.”
Definition: great warmth and earnestness of feeling.
My Sentence: Their fervor was astonishing to see since they normally don’t.
Demented
Book Sentence: “One piglet, with a demented shriek, rushed into the sea trailing Roger’s spear behind it.”
Definition: crazy; insane; mad.
My Sentence: The witch in the story was demented.
