Chapters 5 & 6 Flashcards
what is a solvent?
able to dissolve other substances
what is a solute?
the minor component in a solution, dissolved in the solvent.
how do you find the percentage by mass of a solute?
divide the mass of the solute to the total mass of the solution then multiply 100 to get the mass solute percentage.
how do you find/ what is the equation for the molarity?
divide moles of the solute by the liters of the solution
what is dilution?
what are the 3 dilution equations?
moles(initial) equals moles(final), molarity multiplied by volume equals moles, mols/liters multiplied by liters
what is a chemical reaction?
is a chemical change
what is a reactant?
a substance that we start with that undergoes a change
what is a product?
a new substance that forms during the reaction
what are some physical clues of a chemical reaction?
change in color, production of light, formation of a solid, formation of gas, absorption or release of heat
what is a balanced equation?
the number of atoms of each element is the same in the products as the reactants.
