9. Tess meets Mrs. D’Urberville and deals with Alec
10. Tess goes out to Trantridge, falls out with the other women and is saved by Alec
11. Alec manipulates, harasses and rapes Tess

Phase Two - Maiden No More (12-15)

Phase Four - The Consequence (25-34)

25. Angel POV - he meets his family again
26. Angel talks to his dad about Tess and learns about Alec
27. Angel proposes to Tess and she declines
28. Angel questions Tess’s reluctance to marry while she has a downward spiral
29. Update to Dollop story + Angel shows more affection
30. Angel and Tess deliver milk together + she finally agrees to marry Angel
31. Tess writes to Joan and Joan warns her not to bring up the past, Tess and Angel are overtly affectionate with each other, Angel tells Crick of their marriage and Tess’s friends are excited for her
32. Tess keeps delaying the engagement, Angel enjoys his love of her and buys her wedding clothes
33. Angel and Tess go out for Christmas Eve (parlour incident), she tries to tell him the truth but he never sees her letter + the wedding and goodbye to Talbothays (bad omens)
34. Tess and Angel arrive at the D’Urberville mansions and they both confess their sins at night + dairymaids are depressed

Phase Five - The Woman Pays (35-44)

35. Angel is not happy with Tess’s confession - feels he has been deceived
36. Tess and Angel have fallen out - Tess tries to make it up to him but Angel has lost love for her; they decide to part ways
37. Angel sleepwalks and remembers nothing of it the next day; they travel through the now gray natural world and Angel leaves Tess
38. Tess returns to Marlott; Joan chastises for what happened, John is crushed so Tess leaves pretending to go see him - Joan is sure they will reunite
39. Angel goes back to his family and feels he is a failure - angered at Tess
40. Angel meets Mercy Chant and later Izz - Angel asks if Izz can come with him to Brazil but she changes his mind - Izz assures that Tess loves Alec
41. Tess is back to working while Angel is sick in Brazil, Tess has a downwards spiral - kills wounded pheasants to end their misery
42. Tess makes herself ugly and goes to Flintcomb-Ash to work at Marian’s farm
43. Flintcomb-Ash is described + Tess recognises her employer as the man she’d run from in Trantridge
44. Tess decides to go to Angel’s house and foregoes meeting his family after overhearing Angel’s brother + finds out that Alec is now a preacher

Phase Six - The Convert (45-52)

45. Tess and Alec meet again - Alec insists that he has been redeemed but Tess refuses to believe him
46. Alec comes to Flintcomb-Ash to talk to Tess again and finds out about Angel, he comes again on Candlemas to her lodgings where he gets angry for crushing him to backslide
47. Alec comes again, now having fully given up religion now, Tess slaps him and Alec threatens her
48. Alec comes back again and offers to help + Tess writes a passionate letter to Angel
49. The Clares receive Tess’s letter and blame themselves for Angel’s circumstances + Angel is suffering Brazil and fully realises he was wrong for his rejection + Tess leaves the farm after Liza-Lu informs of her of a family emergency
50. Tess comes back to Blackmoor and Alec comes to offer help again + John Durbeyfield dies, meaning the family will be evicted
51. Tess is at rock-bottom due to her family situation and realises how harsh Angel was
52. Tess and the family move out to Kingsbere + Alec and Tess meet at the tombs + Izz and Marian warn Angel

Question 7

Phase Seven - Fulfilment (53-59)

Answer 7

53. Angel comes back and decides to return to Tess after seeing the letters he’s been sent
54. Angel looks for Tess (sees familiar locations on the way) and travels to Sandbourne after Joan tells him where Tess is
55. Angel arrives at Sandbourne to find out that Tess has been “won back” by Alec
56. Mrs. Brooks hears Alec and Tess fight and later finds out that Tess has killed Alec
57. Angel finds out that Tess killed Alec and they decide to lie low until it is safe again - they stay in an empty mansion
58. Tess and Angel decide to cross the open country and the authorities corner Tess at Stonehenge where she stands down
59. Tess is executed and Angel and Liza-Lu walk away together
